’18 Green’ is a joint initiative of Nepean Football Association and Nepean Referees Group. It raises awareness about the crucial role referees play in the competition of grassroots football, particularly our junior referees.
Respect for all referees is important; however we need to pay special attention to young referees to support their wellbeing and confidence. Since a referee’s age isn’t always apparent, we issue a green armband to each junior referee as part of their kit. They wear around their sleeve or sock on matchday.
Therefore 18 Green takes a powerful step towards building a football community that values and supports its junior referees. By adhering to the principles of respect, protection, and retention. We aim to create a positive and inclusive environment for our young officials.
The Three Pillars of 18 Green
1. Respect
At the heart of the initiative is a call for unwavering respect towards junior referees. Too often, these young individuals face unnecessary criticism and pressure from players, coaches, and spectators. It emphasises the importance of acknowledging the challenging task that referees undertake. Especially when performed by individuals who are still in their formative years. By fostering a culture of respect. 18 Green aims to create an environment where referees feel valued and supported.
2. Protect
The second pillar of the 18 Green initiative is to protect junior referees from undue stress and negativity. Young referees may be more vulnerable to the pressures of officiating. The initiative seeks to shield them from unnecessary criticism. Coaches, players, and spectators are urged to be mindful of their words and actions, understanding the impact they can have on the confidence and development of these junior officials. By protecting young referee. It hopes to create a nurturing atmosphere that allows them to grow and thrive in their roles.
3. Retain
The final component of the 18 Green initiative is the commitment to retaining junior referees within the football community. With many young officials leaving the game due to negative experiences, the Nepean Football Association and Nepean Referees Group are determined to reverse this trend. By fostering an environment of respect and protection, the initiative aims to encourage young referees to continue their officiating journey and contribute to the sport’s growth. Retaining these officials is not only vital for the development of the individuals but also for the overall health and sustainability of football at the grassroots level.
As players, coaches, and spectators, it is our collective responsibility to embrace the 18 Green initiative and ensure that junior referees are not only recognised for their efforts but also empowered to thrive in their roles on the football field.
