In a move to foster a culture of respect and support within the football community, the Nepean Football Association (NFA) in conjunction with the Nepean Referees Group (NRG) has launched its new initiative, 18 Green. This campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the crucial role referees play in the competition of grassroots football with an importance placed on our junior referees who make up almost 50% of the NRG. 18 Green looks to encourage players, coaches, managers and spectators to show respect on a matchday, protect the officials of our game, and retain our referees so football can play on!
The NFA stresses the importance of respecting all referees but attaches the need for special attention towards young referees for their well-being and confidence. Recognising that age isn’t always apparent, we have introduced a simple identifier in the form of green armbands that will be issued as part of their kit.
Respect: At the heart of the 18 Green initiative is a call for unwavering respect towards junior referees. Too often, these young individuals face unnecessary criticism and pressure from players, coaches, and spectators. The NFA emphasises the importance of acknowledging the challenging task that referees undertake, especially when performed by individuals who are still in their formative years. By fostering a culture of respect, the ’18 Green’ initiative aims to create an environment where referees feel valued and supported.
Protect: The second pillar of the 18 Green campaign is to protect junior referees from undue stress and negativity. The NFA highlights that young referees may be more vulnerable to the pressures of officiating, and the campaign seeks to shield them from unnecessary criticism. Coaches, players, and spectators are urged to be mindful of their words and actions, understanding the impact they can have on the confidence and development of these junior officials. By protecting young referees, the NFA hopes to create a nurturing atmosphere that allows them to grow and thrive in their roles.
Retain: The final component of the 18 Green initiative is the commitment to retaining junior referees within the football community. With many young officials leaving the game due to negative experiences, the NFA is determined to reverse this trend. By fostering an environment of respect and protection, the association aims to encourage young referees to continue their officiating journey and contribute to the sport’s growth. Retaining these officials is not only vital for the development of the individuals but also for the overall health and sustainability of football at the grassroots level.
18 Green is a powerful step towards building a football community that values and supports its junior referees. By adhering to the principles of respect, protection, and retention, the campaign aims to create a positive and inclusive environment for these young officials. As players, coaches, and spectators, it is our collective responsibility to embrace the 18 Green initiative and ensure that junior referees are not only recognised for their efforts but also empowered to thrive in their roles on the football field.
